    Dynamical Mass Generation and Confinement in Maxwell-Chern-Simons Planar Quantum Electrodynamics

    We study the non-perturbative phenomena of Dynamical Mass Generation and Confinement by truncating at the non-perturbative level the Schwinger-Dyson equations in Maxwell-Chern-Simons planar quantum electrodynamics. We obtain numerical solutions for the fermion propagator in Landau gauge within the so-called rainbow approximation.     Fermion Condensate and Vacuum Current Density Induced by Homogeneous and Inhomogeneous Magnetic Fields in (2+1)-Dimensions

    We calculate the condensate and the vacuum current density induced by external static magnetic fields in (2+1)-dimensions. At the perturbative level, we consider an exponentially decaying magnetic field along one cartesian coordinate. Non-perturbatively, we obtain the fermion propagator in the presence of a uniform magnetic field by solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation in the rainbow-ladder approximation. In the large flux limit, we observe that both these quantities, either perturbative (inhomogeneous) and non-perturbative (homogeneous), are proportional to the external field, in agreement with early expectations.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures.     Global analysis of mannitol 2-dehydrogenase in lactobacillus reuteri crl 1101 during mannitol production through enzymatic, genetic and proteomic approaches

    Several plants, fungi, algae, and certain bacteria produce mannitol, a polyol derived from fructose. Mannitol has multiple industrial applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and medical industries, being mainly used as a non-metabolizable sweetener in foods. Many heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria synthesize mannitol when an alternative electron acceptor such as fructose is present in the medium. In previous work, we reported the ability of Lactobacillus reuteri CRL 1101 to efficiently produce mannitol from sugarcane molasses as carbon source at constant pH of 5.0; the activity of the enzyme mannitol 2-dehydrogenase (MDH) responsible for the fructose conversion into mannitol being highest during the log cell growth phase. Here, a detailed assessment of the MDH activity and relative expression of the mdh gene during the growth of L. reuteri CRL 1101 in the presence of fructose is presented. It was observed that MDH was markedly induced by the presence of fructose. A direct correlation between the maximum MDH enzyme activity and a high level of mdh transcript expression during the log-phase of cells grown in a fructose-containing chemically defined medium was detected. Furthermore, two proteomic approaches (2DE and shotgun proteomics) applied in this study confirmed the inducible expression of MDH in L. reuteri. A global study of the effect of fructose on activity, mdh gene, and protein expressions of MDH in L. reuteri is thus for the first time presented. This work represents a deep insight into the polyol formation by a Lactobacillus strain with biotechnological potential in the nutraceutics and pharmaceutical areas.Fil: Ortiz, María Eugenia.     Chiral and Parity Symmetry Breaking for Planar Fermions: Effects of a Heat Bath and Uniform External Magnetic Field

    We study chiral symmetry breaking for relativistic fermions, described by a parity violating Lagrangian in 2+1-dimensions, in the presence of a heat bath and a uniform external magnetic field. Working within their four-component formalism allows for the inclusion of both parity-even and -odd mass terms. Therefore, we can define two types of fermion anti-fermion condensates. For a given value of the magnetic field, there exist two different critical temperatures which would render one of these condensates identically zero, while the other would survive. Our analysis is completely general: it requires no particular simplifying hierarchy among the energy scales involved, namely, bare masses, field strength and temperature. However, we do reproduce some earlier results, obtained or anticipated in literature, corresponding to special kinematical regimes for the parity conserving case. Relating the chiral condensate to the one-loop effective Lagrangian, we also obtain the magnetization and the pair production rate for different fermion species in a uniform electric field through the replacement B→−iEB\to-iE.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figure

    We model the behaviour of a buyer trying to evade the real estate transfer tax. We identify over-appraisal as a key, easily-observable element that is inversely related with tax evasion. We conclude that the tax authority could focus auditing efforts on low appraisal transactions. We include ‘behavioural’ components (shame and stigma) allowing to introduce buyers' (education) and societal (social capital) characteristics that explain individual and idiosyncratic variations. Our empirical analysis confirms the predictions using a unique database, where we directly observe: real payment, value declared to the authority, appraisal, buyers' educational level and local levels of corruption and trust

    Validation of 3D spino-pelvic muscle reconstructions based on dedicated MRI sequences for fat-water quantification

     Objectives: To evaluate a protocol, including MRI acquisition with dedicated sequences for fat-water quantification and semi-automatic segmentation, for 3D geometry measurement and fat infiltration of key muscles of the spino-pelvic complex. Materials and Methods: MRI Protocol: Two axial acquisitions from the thoraco-lumbar region to the patella were obtained: one T1 weighted and one based on the Dixon method, permitted to evaluate the proportion of fat inside each muscle. Muscle Reconstruction: With Muscl’X software, 3D reconstructions of 18 muscles or groups of muscles were obtained identifying their contours on a limited number of axial images (DPSO Method); 3D references were obtained only on T1 acquisitions identifying the contour of the muscles on all axial images. Evaluation: For two volunteers, three operators completed reconstructions three times across three sessions. Each reconstruction was projected on the reference to calculate the ‘point to surface’ error. Mean and maximal axial section, muscle volume, and muscle length calculated from the reconstructions were compared to reference values, and intra- and inter-operator variability for those parameters were evaluated. Results: 2xRMS ‘point to surface’ error was below 3 mm, on average. The agreement between the two methods was variable between muscles [-4.50; 8.00 %] for the mean axial section, the length and the volume. Intra- and inter-operator variability were less than 5% and comparison of variability for the Fat and T1 reconstructions did not reveal any significant differences. Discussion: Excellent inter- and intra-operator reliability was demonstrated for 3D muscular reconstruction using the DPSO method and Dixon images that allowed generation of patient-specific musculoskeletal models. Fondation Paristech, ISS

    Three-dimensional reconstruction and visualization of the cerebral cortex in primates

    We present a prototype interactive application for the direct analysis in three dimensions of the cerebral cortex in primates. The paper provides an overview of the current prototype system and presents the techniques used for reconstructing the cortex shape from data derived from histological sections as well as for rendering it at interactive rates. Results are evaluated by discussing the analysis of the right hemisphere of the brain of a macaque monkey used for neuroanatomical tract-tracing experiments.147-15
